Does your household clear €21,201 a year?

Residence permit as a self-employed person under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty. The threshold rises for each person you bring, so it counts your children.

Threshold from Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), Required amounts income requirements, checked 2026-08-26. It is the published test, not a decision on your case.

Your children

Every child aged 5 to 16 who lives in the Netherlands must be enrolled at a school and must actually attend it. Compulsory education applies to children of any nationality, including foreign nationals and newcomers. Most children start at 4; compulsory schooling begins on the first day of the month after a child turns 5. Parents pay no tuition at a state funded primary school. Schools may ask a parental contribution, which is voluntary by law, and a school may not exclude a child from activities if it is not paid.

Worth knowing

Dutch state schools teach in Dutch. Dutch law also allows a state funded international stream: the Minister may fund an internationally oriented department (internationaal georienteerd basisonderwijs) at a publicly funded primary school, and such schools receive extra funding for it. Admission to that department is restricted by statute to a child who holds a nationality other than Dutch, or holds one alongside Dutch nationality, and has at least one parent working in the Netherlands for a fixed period; or to a Dutch child returning from a posting abroad after more than 2 years of foreign schooling; or to a Dutch child whose parent has a written employer statement of a posting abroad of at least 2 years within the next 2 years.

International schooling runs €20,461 to €32,755 per child per year.

What goes wrong

Families who need free English-language state schooling as a right. Dutch state schools teach in Dutch, and the affordable international stream is a statutory carve-out with eligibility conditions and finite places, not an entitlement.
