Your children

Your children enrol in Italian state schools on the same terms as Italian children. Article 38 of the immigration code, D.Lgs. 286/1998, makes every foreign minor present in Italy subject to compulsory schooling and applies to them every rule on the right to education, access to educational services and participation in school life. Compulsory education runs from age 6 to age 16. Article 45 of DPR 394/1999 allows enrolment to be requested at any point in the school year, and a child is placed in the year group matching their age unless the teachers' board decides otherwise on the evidence. Article 34 of the Constitution makes compulsory lower education free.

Worth knowing

Instruction is in Italian. English is a compulsory subject in every year of primary school, and the national guidelines expect a pupil to leave primary school at CEFR level A1 in English. Only in Italy's recognised minority language areas may a school use a second language alongside Italian as a teaching language.

International schooling runs €11,800 to €28,000 per child per year.

What goes wrong

Families who need either parent to keep earning. Italy's elective residence visa forbids any work activity in Italy, and the income test counts only passive income, so a remote salary neither qualifies you nor may be continued once you arrive.
